Marriage Mentoring

By Scott Doust
Pastor of Involvement and Care

Thirteen years ago my wife, Abigail, and I sat in our pastor’s office as he gave us advice on what marriage was going to be like. I can honestly say 13 years later, I have only a vague recollection of those visits. If you are like me, you may not remember much of the counsel you received before you got married, or you may be among the large number of people that never received any pre-marital counseling.

As a part of marriage initiative we have started matching mentor couples with mentee couples to participate in a year-long, once-a-month conversation about marriage. The goal is to strengthen couples who want to continue to grow in their relationship with each other and the Lord. This is not counseling, but instead friendship.

Every couple can use time with another couple to talk about marriage, in-laws, and the issues that prevent us from growing closer together, and closer to God.

Each month, you and your mentor couple will meet and talk about a different topic in a very conversational way. They will share their experiences and give you an opportunity to share yours. Although Abigail and I lead the Marriage Ministry we chose to spend a year as a mentee couple and we are thoroughly enjoying getting to know another couple in a very relaxed way. We have enjoyed receiving their wisdom as a couple that has been married about 10 years longer than us.

If you are interested in being involved in this ministry as a mentor or mentee couple, visit the church website or contact Todd or Amy Daehnert at  or .

Building marriages that not only last, but flourish

The Marriage Ministry addresses marriage from multiple aspects with the goal of taking a struggling marriage to a good marriage, a good marriage to a great marriage, and a great marriage to a phenomenal marriage.

The ministry sees marriage preparation as a part of marriage, as a firm foundation is needed to build a strong relationship. The ministry wants marriage to begin based on the Bible with a focus on understanding where each person is spiritually and then building the relationship from there.

The Marriage ministry also recognizes in our society that divorce is an easy option for many inside and outside of the church. We want to help the married couples take divorce off the table as an option, through helping them see God’s design for marriage. At the same time we want to walk with people that are preparing to enter into re-marriage in love and with the goal of making this marriage phenomenal.

Activities within the Marriage Ministry are missional and kingdom oriented, seeking life transformation. We work with primarily the Men’s, Women’s, Care, Parenting, and Small Group Ministries. We commit to the Bible, not any author.
